TTF – Lonely Planet Listing Top Endorsement For Tassie

Published on : Tuesday, October 21, 2014

ttfThe inclusion of Tasmania in Lonely Planet’s Best in Travel 2015 as one of the world’s top ten regions to visit in 2015 demonstrates the quality of its tourism offering, according to peak national industry body Tourism & Transport Forum (TTF).

TTF Chief Executive Margy Osmond said the recognition of Tasmania as a top global tourism destination is well deserved.

“Tasmania is a very appealing destination to visitors with spectacular natural attractions, such as Bay of Fires, as well as modern urban precincts in its capital Hobart including MONA,” Ms Osmond said.

“Tourism Tasmania has done an excellent job promoting its natural, cultural and food and wine attractions to the world and the Lonely Planet’s recognition of the state is testament to this.

“Consistent marketing activities are essential in letting the world know about what Tasmania has to offer and Tourism Tasmania’s efforts helped the state achieve 10 per cent visitor growth in 2013/14, with visitor nights up 12 per cent and expenditure up 18 per cent.

“Holiday visitors drove the growth, jumping 25 per cent for the year, with nights up 23 per cent and expenditure rising by an impressive 31per cent.

“The additional $16 million investment by the Hodgman government in tourism marketing will help leverage this growth by building industry confidence and attracting additional investment that will deliver further expenditure throughout Tasmania’s visitor economy.

“Tasmania is Australia’s most tourism dependent state, with 17,000 direct and 24,000 indirect jobs, but tourism employment will continue to grow with the right support.

“While it already contributes $2.4 billion in GSP to the Tasmanian economy, the additional profile gained from the Lonely Planet inclusion and an increased focus on tourism marketing will help tourism fulfil its potential as an economic development strategy for Tasmania, providing additional job and business opportunities and future prosperity across the state.”
