TTF – Notice Brings Badgerys A Step Closer

Published on : Monday, August 18, 2014

ttfA Western Sydney airport is another step closer with the federal government this morning issuing a Notice to Consult, according to peak national industry body Tourism & Transport Forum (TTF).

TTF Acting Chief Executive Trent Zimmerman said the tourism industry is pleased to see the progress.

“Today’s announcement brings an airport for Western Sydney another step closer to reality,” Mr Zimmerman said.

“An airport in Western Sydney will generate economic activity, create jobs and provide businesses and residents in the region with unprecedented access to air travel and freight services.

“However, with the airport still more than a decade away, we are urging the federal government to modernise the operating conditions at Sydney Airport to allow it to better cater for current and future demand.

“The arbitrary cap on aircraft movements at Sydney Airport was introduced almost 20 years ago and makes it unnecessarily difficult for Sydney Airport to operate.

“There is no safety or operational rationale behind the cap of 80 movements per hour and lifting the cap would make a significant difference to capacity at Sydney Airport.

“We need to take steps now to ensure we get the most out of the existing infrastructure to support the continuing growth of the visitor economy.

“Modernising Sydney Airport’s operating conditions must be part of any consideration of Sydney’s future aviation needs.

“Regardless of when a Badgerys Creek airport is built, Sydney Airport will remain the primary aviation hub for Sydney and Australia’s premier international gateway, and it needs to be able to operate to its potential, not with one hand tied behind its back.

“Freeing up capacity at Sydney Airport will help New South Wales and Australia reach the Tourism 2020 goal of doubling overnight visitor expenditure by the end of the decade.”
