The $5 billion tourism industry has congratulated Premier Jay Weatherill on forming government and called for tourism to be made a key economic development priority for South Australia, according to peak body Tourism & Transport Forum (TTF).
TTF Chief Executive Ken Morrison said now is the time for South Australia to make a strong
investment in the future of tourism.
“Congratulations to Labor and Premier Jay Weatherill on forming government,” said Mr
Morrison.
“The Premier has quite rightly identified jobs and the economy as top priorities and tourism
can be a strong driver of growth for South Australia.
“The sector already supports 56,000 jobs statewide and contributes $5 billion to gross state
product, but with the right policy settings it could make an even greater contribution to the
state economy.”
Prior to the election TTF published 2014 South Australian Election: Priorities for the Visitor
Economy, which sets out a tourism policy blueprint for the incoming government.
“We welcome Labor’s commitment during the election campaign to provide an additional $6
million over four years for major events, but more needs to be done, including boosting
marketing funding, committing to long-term funding for business event acquisition, and
investing in the next wave of tourism infrastructure projects,” said Mr Morrison.
“TTF will continue to champion the South Australian tourism industry and looks forward to
working with the Weatherill government to ensure tourism is one of the industries creating job opportunities and economic stability now and into the future.”
