The city of Münster has a rich history dating to 793 and is now considered the cultural hub of Westphalia. It is also known as the bicycle capital of Germany, with an extensive network of roads and paths created for bicyclists. Every day, more than 100,000 people in total ride an estimated 500,000 bicycles on the roads of the city.

Münster is a place where history has been well preserved. In the old city center, houses have been renovated in the original style while churches and public squares display the different architectural styles that represent centuries of habitation. The town hall, known as ‘Historisches Rathaus Münster’, is a Gothic structure that dates back to the 14th century. The Public Square and main boulevard, dating back to the Middle Ages, provide a focus for many festivals and parades.

‘Aaseestadt’ is a district of the central city that provides recreational activities for all ages. It includes both walking and bike trails, sailing and boating on the lake in solar powered craft that can take one to the zoo, planetarium or nearby museums.

Münster hosts a wide range of festivals and activities throughout the year. Art, music and a wide range of museums and galleries provide both residents and visitors with numerous cultural outlets.

For equestrians, the Tournament of Champions, one of the oldest tournaments in Germany, is a major riding and show-jumping event that draws horses and riders from around the world.

Osnabrück, equidistant from the airport, is a city dating to the 8th century and also founded by Charlemagne. While somewhat smaller, it too has a rich history and has been fully restored to its original state following the war. Like Münster, it offers a full schedule of cultural and sporting events throughout the year.
