The Adelaide Convention Centre has won two major conferences – one national and another international – as the Centre’s $350 million expansion continues to generate interest among conference organisers.
The Centre has won the Asia Pacific Oil & Gas Conference & Exhibition (APOGCE) 2014 and Australian Gastroenterological Week (AGW) 2016, the annual meeting of the Gastroenterological Society of Australia.
Together, these conferences will bring nearly 2000 people into Adelaide including some of the world’s leading experts in their fields.
They will also inject nearly $5 million into the South Australian economy and generate 5,879 bed nights for local hotels.
AGW is one of the most significant scientific meetings in the Asia Pacific region and features the latest advances in clinical management, cutting-edge translational and basic science, and original research in endoscopy, gastroenterology and hepatology.
APOGCE will explore the continued changes affecting the oil and gas industry, with the theme of the conference – Changing the Game: Opportunities, Challenges, and Solutions. It will cover topics such as “Oil & Gas Reserves and Resources: Do the Rules Match the Game?” and “Accelerating Field Production: Fast-Tracking Development Plans and Execution”.
Adelaide Convention Centre, Chief Executive Alec Gilbert, said the Centre’s $350 million expansion and the increasing number of international flights coming into Adelaide are capturing the attention of conference organisers.
“Both these conferences chose the Adelaide Convention Centre because of the facilities, air access into Adelaide from Asia and because of South Australia’s capabilities and resources in the Medical and Oil and Gas sectors, said Mr Gilbert.
“There’s no doubt that the construction of a medical hub with its world class research centres and the new hospital being created next door to the Centre in Adelaide’s Riverbank precinct is seen as a major benefit to medical and health conference organisers.
“Adelaide is also now more connected than ever before with international carriers Emirates, Singapore Airlines and Cathy Pacific all flying into Adelaide at least daily from Dubai, Singapore and Hong Kong.
“Low-cost airline AirAsia X also recently started flying into Adelaide with flights four times a week from its hub in Kuala Lumpur.”
International interest in Adelaide has been boosted recently by being named one of the top 10 cities in the world to visit in 2014 by travel publisher Lonely Planet.
“Adelaide is effortlessly chic – and like a perfectly cellared red, it’s ready to be uncorked and sampled,” Lonely Planet says.
Some of the delegates attending AGW and APOGCE are expected to enjoy the city and state’s attractions by planning pre and post conference trips to destinations within South Australia.
APOGCE will be held at the Centre from October 14-16, 2014 and AGW will be held at the Centre from October 10 – 13, 2016.
