Undeterred by increasing violence, Ukrainian tourism leaders are busy advertising Crimean resorts, Black Sea cruises, and scenic Kiev as holiday destinations at March 5-9 Berlin tourism fair.
Kateryna Suprovych, in charge of promoting Crimea’s tourism said, “We’re hoping for a good season. The situation in the country is not stable but it’s not war.’’
From the tourism board for the western city of Lviv, Marta Naumenko said, “Right now, we’re working on the 2015 season, hoping that tensions will have ebbed.’’
Her stand at the trade fair is aptly wedged between those of the United States and Russia.
Ukrainian tourism grew significantly in 2013, and executives at the Berlin fair said that their target was to double influx over the next eight years.
A few tourism officials of Ukraine in Berlin confessed that the sector was taking a hit from the crisis, which has left Moscow and the West in a high-risk clash.
Crimea has a proud history as a holiday destination, drawing tens of thousands of Ukrainian and Russian tourists every summer, with a rising number of Germans and Poles.
