ttf_2016The Tourism & Transport Forum Australia (TTF) is encouraging new Northern Territory Chief Minister Michael Gunner to appoint himself as the new Minister for Tourism in recognition of the sector’s important role in supporting jobs and economic growth in the NT economy.

“There is a growing cohort of Australian Premiers and Chief Ministers who have been assuming responsibility for the tourism portfolio and we would strongly encourage Michael Gunner as the new NT Chief Minister to continue this trend,” said Margy Osmond, TTF CEO.

“The NT economy is continuing the difficult transition from the end of the mining boom to a new services-based economy and tourism is one of the key pillars that will support job creation and economic growth into the future.

“I note that Mr Gunner’s predecessor held the tourism portfolio as Chief Minister and I hope that we can establish this as a new bipartisan tradition going forward.”

Ms Osmond said that before the election TTF had released a six-point plan to grow the Norther Territory visitor economy by investing to grow demand, boosting investment in tourism and transport infrastructure, and enhancing the visitor experience to ensure the Territory can remain competitive and drive further economic activity and create thousands of new jobs.

“We need strong leadership to ensure that the Territory can take advantage of the strong visitor growth that is occurring in the Asia-Pacific region and that leadership is best placed with the Chief Minister.

“TTF is looking forward to the opportunity over the coming term of the new NT Government to work with the Chief Minister and his Ministers to ensure that the Territory’s visitor economy can reach its full potential.”
