The newest playground in the uber-chic beach enclave of Seminyak and the first W Retreat in Indonesia, W Retreat & Spa Bali – Seminyak reinvents the local Bali scene and emanates the exuberance of its locale, where designer boutiques, eclectic galleries, lively restaurants, and chic cocktail bars and clubs hold court on the enchanting island of Bali.
Designed by SCDA Architects, AB Concept and Poole Associates Private Limited, W Retreat & Spa Bali – Seminyak has been designed to exude an exhilarating look and feel that flirts with the counterpoints of conceal/reveal and inside/outside of Bali’s legendary night mysticism, allowing guests to mix and mingle, to be part of the scene or remain unseen as they escape to their own retreats. The retreat radiates with a contemporary twist on traditional Balinese design, reflecting the island’s rich, natural beauty and cultural heritage while stimulating guests’ senses with playful punches of modern designs and textures.

Guests may choose from one of 158 Wonderful and Spectacular retreats and suites, offering a sensational swirl of high-energy interiors, vivid design, cutting-edge technology and uniquely modern amenities to fulfill every wish. The retreats are among the largest on the island, with the majority of them offering views of the Indian Ocean. Seventy-nine villa retreats are also available, each with private entrance and pool.
As the bright Balinese sun crosses the sky, it casts shadows, alternatively concealing and revealing the vibrant traditions and riches. Following the spellbinding sunset, torchlight Balinese ceremonies explode with dance and masks, layering life with mysticism and mystery. Music and celebration infuse the island and the colorful nightlife of Seminyak with a mystical soundtrack and contagious spirit.
Bali’s new “Indigenous Utopia” begins in a terraced lobby space (“Welcome” in W lingo) – the signature W Lounge – that reveals a sensual aura with vibrant tropical pinks and purples and oversized day beds facing the coastal breeze. Swaths of billowing, sheer linen dance throughout the space, while sturdy synthetic rattan further
blurs the line between inside and out. At Welcome, the sea breeze whips past monsoon screens and whistles through a wall of hand-blown glass jars, each holding a piece of capiz shell that allows the wall to “sing.” W Retreat & Spa Bali – Seminyak’s modern interpretation of Bali’s traditional design is also seen in the chic resin contours of the W Lounge and its eye-catching, back-lit bar that glows in electric LED hues, while lampshades woven from synthetic rattan resemble pagoda roofs. Terrazzo tiling, cut to resemble leaf veins and shimmering with inlaid sea shell, is topped with silver leaf-shaped sculptures in hand-beaten metal that double as seating. al that double as seating. VIPsGuests can also luxuriate in privacy on four poster beds tucked into W Lounge’s signature Secret Space.
Other innovative design features form an alluring atmosphere at W Retreat & Spa Bali – Seminyak. Guest retreats are enveloped in aquatic green hues, inspired by Bali’s surrounding seascapes. Bed throws in white cottons are stitched by hand to resemble leaf pattern; beaded pendant lamps are inspired by local fishing nets; and headboards are made of synthetic leather embossed in green stingray skin. AB Concept took cues from a uniquely Balinese checkered textile pattern in the design for feature wall panels, which slide to conceal the television. The three-tone pattern known as “Poleng” represents good, evil and the space between; the studio reworked the concept here in mother of pearl. Light weathered oak has been used for surfaces elsewhere, while bedside tables are formed with thick sheets of floating glass and framed with light.
Guests enter the super-luxe E-WOW and WOW suites through the sliding door of a sleek, circular wooden vestibule and across a small private pond, before being greeted by a panoramic floor-to-ceiling view of the Indian Ocean and ultra-stylish accommodations. The E-WOW suite, W’s take on the Presidential Suite, boasts a pantry, a dining table, an ocean day spa bed, two bedrooms and a living room with a sofa generously custom built to seat a party of W Retreat & Spa Bali – Seminyak jet-setters.
W Bali brings a complete contemporary lifestyle experience to Bali, featuring distinct concept restaurants and bars, designed by Ed Poole of Poole Associates, such as FIRE and Starfish Bloo; destination bars WooBar and Ice. W Bali also adds the signature AWAY® Spa by W Hotels, open 24/7; FIT state-of-the-art fitness center; WIRED business center; WET pool deck and W Hotels – The Store, W’s take on the traditional hotel gift shop.
FIRE has been designed to echo the famed Balinese “Kecak” dance, in which men dressed in sarongs set in the “Poleng” black-and-white checkered pattern, representing good vs. evil, chant around a central fire. At FIRE, illuminated by bold colors of white, black, red and yellow, the checkered pattern is seen in the exquisite marble adorning the show kitchen. Poleng pendants hang languidly around the room, while the Kecak fireball chandelier radiates from the center of a ceiling made of burnt timber strips. Draperies are hemmed in the Balinese traditional double “ikat” weaving style, which is created in a single village in Bali.
A casual, elegant seaside Pan Asian restaurant, Starfish Bloo goes under the sea with oversized booths evoking gigantic lobster traps, tanks of undulating kelp, blue starfish pillows, and weather-beaten timber finishes. Columns clad in blue resin rise in a stylized starfish shape, while the outdoor Ice bar is draped in textured glass and backed with a mirror, creating a cool, fluid effect.
Shaped like a coral reef exposed at low tide, WooBar entices with cool cocktails, hot DJ spins and sensual design, both indoors and outdoors. Inside, the oval reef bar is swathed in amber lighting and surrounded by coral-shaped cocktail tables. Within WooBar is the intimate Whiskey Lounge, which features a striking LED-lit bottle display that lights up the sizzling Seminyak night vibe. Crowned by a commanding chandelier, the WooBar stairway gives way to a dance floor awash in a rainbow of electric colors and topped with oversized fans with a custom mirror-polish finish. The music emanates from the left of the dance floor, where a raised DJ and bongo player hold court under skylights that offer natural light onto the dance floor. Outside, WooBar guests can luxuriate on glamorous rooftop lounge at WooSky, by cozy cocktail tables at WooDeck, or in the surrounding WET pool deck.
Adding to the “elemental” theme found throughout the hotel, the AWAY ® Spa’s design is inspired by two of Bali’s most sacred elements: the wind and water. The wind is believed to represent the “breath of life” while the water, “the source of life.” Designed by A.W. LAKE® Spa Concepts, Singapore, AWAY® Spa’s interior reflects these two elements’ movements and constant flow. From the “blue water” ceiling of the entrance, to the iconic “windswept” wall leading to the spa spacious suites, guests’ senses are delighted by unexpected forms and surprising spaces.
