vienna-convention-bureau-300x165The Weinwandertag on 1 and 2 October 2016 provides an excellent opportunity to explore the capital’s vineyards. Uniquely for a global capital, more than 700 hectares of the city are dedicated to winegrowing.

Around 190 Viennese growers cultivate the areas around Kahlenberg, Nussberg, Bisamberg and Mauer, where the Danube and the Vienna Woods come together to create an ideal microclimate. This autumn, the Wiener Weinwandertag opens up three routes through the idyllic vineyards, taking in private estates not normally open to the public.

Route 1 gets underway in Neustift am Walde and continues to Nussdorf. Stretching for 10 kilometres, it takes in Sievering, Weingut Wien Cobenzl and Grinzing – must-see highlights that provide an authentic insight into the capital’s wine growing culture and wine tavern traditions. The route can be joined at any of the three locations, which is welcome news for anyone who can’t spare a full day. Wine tasting sessions and culinary treats are in plentiful supply at Weingut Wien Cobenzl and the numerous Heuriger, (wine taverns) that line the route. Weaving its way through the vineyards of the 19th district, the route offers fantastic views of the city and the Danube below.

Route 2 runs from Strebersdorf to Stammersdorf, a popular Heuriger destination in the 21st district. Extending for some 11.7 kilometres, this option is brimming with scenic views as well as numerous authentic wine taverns such as Weingut Wieninger. Coming in at just 2.4 kilometres Route 3 is the shortest of the three. This circular walk starts and finishes at Schloss Wilhelminenberg and takes in Sprenger steig and Paulinen steig along the way. As with the others, this tour also passes various places to stop off for a drink and a bite to eat.
