Minister for Tourism, Matt Conlan, said early feedback from Channel 7’s Weekend Sunrise live broadcast from Alice Springs on Australia Day is extremely encouraging.

Mr Conlan said the show rated very well across the country, showcasing the Territory as a holiday destination to hundreds of thousands of Australians.

“The three hour Weekend Sunrise live broadcast from Alice Springs on Australia Day was the top rating Free-to-Air morning show across the five major metropolitan cities according to OzTAM ratings,” Mr Conlan said.

“The program was also the 13th most watched program for the day, peaking at 364,000 viewers across Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth.

“According to the OzTAM ratings figures, Brisbane had the highest viewing audience, with 119,000 tuning in.

“Elsewhere, the audience peaked at 86,000 in Sydney, 107,000 in Melbourne, 31,000 in Adelaide and 33,000 in Perth.

“These are terrific ratings and we are confident the show and Tourism NT’s latest marketing campaign, Australia’s Unexplored Backyard, will translate into an increase in visitors to the Territory.

“The live broadcast, held in the city centre, was also a real morale booster to the people of Alice Springs, something money simply can’t buy.

“The show featured segments on Alice Springs, Sky City Resort and Crocosaurus Cove in Darwin, Litchfield National Park as well as the Adelaide River jumping crocodile cruise.

“In addition to the broadcast, the Seven Network presenters were also very active in social media, further extending the audience reach amongst their influential circles.

“Tourism NT provided considerable advice and logistical support to the Weekend Sunrise team in order to deliver the program in Alice Springs and I thank the team for all their hard work.”
