What is Japan Matsuri?

Published on : Friday, August 12, 2016

Japanese-National-Tourism-Organisation-logoJapan Matsuri is London’s very own festival of Japanese culture, bringing Japanese food, events and hands-on activities to the UK each September. There will be two large stages at the event, alongside food and exhibition stalls.

Expect to be enthralled by the enticing rhythm of the enormous taiko drums, and to witness martial arts and traditional dances from this unique island nation. This will be a very interactive day for all ages – encouraging you to eat foods you may never have heard of, take part in traditional Japanese activities such as dressing up in a kimono, and to enjoy the festival atmosphere that Japanese people experience throughout their annual calendars. This is one of the few chances Londoners and people from across the UK have to discover more about this incredibly diverse, culturally rich island nation – so make sure to take full advantage and turn up on the day.

Activities on offer this year include: manga art, calligraphy, origami, kimono dressing and plenty more. For those planning a holiday to Japan in the near future, the festival will also provide a fountain of information on how to get there, and what to do when you arrive. Companies such as Japan Experience, Japan Airlines and ANA will all be exhibiting – along with JNTO! We’ll be on hand to offer advice and tips for your upcoming holiday, and you’ll be able to collect brochures from our stall to get in-depth information about Japan as a holiday destination. So for our website and newsletter readers, make sure you swing by and say ‘hello’.

On the food side, Japan food-addicts are guaranteed to be able to fill any cravings at this festival – which will see stalls offering everything from okonomiyaki to gyudon, curry and yakisoba, in traditional festival style.

You’ll also be able to purchase Japanese products – such as tableware from DOKI Ltd, or cute Japanese stationary from Kanaby Enterprise. Toys, kokeshi dolls and other products which will make fabulous Christmas gifts (yes, it’s already that time of year), for family and friends will also be on sale.
