bellingham-300x62Sustainable Connections in Bellingham, WA reveals several plans to celebrate Independents Month throughout Whatcom County in July 2014.

The second annual Whatcom Wine and Spirits Fest, a celebration on July 20th at Bellewood Acres, encourages people to Drink Local First. Attendees can enjoy over 40 different local wines, local food, live music, and a raffle. Tickets are available now online ($25) or at the door ($32) and include 8 tasting tickets.

A Think Local First Scavenger Hunt will take place at local, independent businesses. Search for the Be Local Bee and be entered to win a Local Summer Adventure Pack filled with items such as museum and movie passes, ice cream certificates, Wine and Spirits Fest tickets and more! Participating businesses and additional details can be found online at SustainableConnections.org or in the Sustainable Connection’s annual directory of local businesses in the July 2nd editions of the Cascadia Weekly and Bellingham Herald.

Kids of all ages can enter a Think Local First Coloring Contest by picking up a coloring page at Kids Northwest, Fairhaven Toy Garden, Launching Success Learning Store, Mallard Ice Cream or Village Books. Coloring pages are also available to download at sustainable.connections.org. Participants can return their artwork to any of the local businesses mentioned above for a chance to win local prizes and winners will be drawn randomly from different age groups.

A Spin to Win Sustainable Connections booth will be at the Bellingham Farmers Market on July 12th. Lucky folks can win copies of the 2014 Where the Locals Go! Coupon Book, bumper stickers, buttons and special prizes donated by local businesses.

“Our independent businesses contribute to our one-of-a-kind community by providing variety, supporting our well-being, reducing their environmental impact, keeping our dollars recirculating in our community, strengthening our economy and providing local jobs,” says Michelle Grandy, Think Local First manager at Sustainable Connections. “When the United States celebrates its independence on July 4th, it’s only natural that we celebrate our freedom to choose, including to shop with local, independently owned businesses around Whatcom County, too.”
