Ever dreamed of touching down between the skyscrapers of Tokyo, dining in the tiny bars of the Golden Gai and visiting the towering ‘torii’ gates of the Meiji Shrine?
ANA (All Nippon Airways) has launched an exciting new competition, offering two lucky travellers the opportunity to win flights and a hotel stay in Tokyo, along with an ANA Rimowa Classic suitcase (for you to take home all your souvenirs in!)

The competition will close at 5:00pm 5th September 2016, and the trip must be taken between 1st October 2016 – 31st March 2017. Restrictions apply during particularly busy periods. If you’re the lucky prize winner of this competition, or simply in Tokyo for a few days and want to find out the best way to make the most of your time, here are some of our recommendations below Meiji Shrine – from Harajuku Station it takes around ten minutes to walk beneath the giant wooden torii gates and through what seems like a secluded forest to the main shrine buildings. Here you can try ‘o-mikuji’: where you shake a box and take out a stick with a number written on it. A drawer with a corresponding number will contain your fortune. If it’s bad, tie it to a nearby post to offset the negative luck.
Sensoji Temple – another taste of ‘old Japan’ can be found in Asakusa, next to the Nakamise market, which is great for souvenir shopping, with endless stalls selling traditional Japanese products for great prices. This colourful temple makes postcard-worthy photos, and various festivals are held here throughout the year. Animal cafes – owl cafes, goat cafes, pug cafes… Japan has it all, and Tokyo is especially rife with all sorts of coffee-and-cuddle combinations for animal lovers to enjoy. The new hedgehog café, in particular, has gone down a storm on the internet.
Always dreamed of spotting the white crest of Mount Fuji? You needn’t leave Tokyo to do it. Climb to the top of Mount Takao (a 50 minute journey from Shinjuku Station) and on a good day you’ll spot this famed mountain from the summit. The station nearest the bottom of the mountain has a hot spring, and also an abundance of delicious and picturesque soba restaurants. If you’re a ramen fan, try Ramen Street at the Yaesu Underground Exit of Tokyo Station – where you’ll find several ramen shops lined up next to one another. It’s an endless indulgence and a great way to try new flavours. Alternatively, Nishinaka Dori street has 75 monja-yaki restaurants – a dish which originates in Tokyo, and is similar to okonomiyaki.

One of the most renowned views of the Tokyo skyline is from the New York bar at the Park Hyatt hotel in Shinjuku. Famed for hosting Bill and Scarlett in Lost in Translation, this bar has a fantastic cocktail menu, as well as live music (just like in the film!). Although the dazzling lights of the city below are enough to create a romantic atmosphere and keep you entertained all evening by themselves.
