VISAKHAPATNAMIn a significant turn of events workers of various tourism department units are up in arms, demanding that the department first clear pending salaries and then organise the three-day Araku Utsav slated to be held between November 28 and 30 at Araku in
Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh.

More than 100 workers of the tribal community are working in the tourism department’s units posted at various places in the agency, pointed out the Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) Visakhapatnam rural unit leader, V Uma Maheswara Rao.

“The department had utilised their services without a break but has not paid their salaries for the last seven months. We demand that the department first clear the pending salaries of the workers and then go for the utsav. If their demand is not addressed before the utsav, these workers will be ready to protest in front of the tourism spots against the department’s apathy towards addressing their demand,” Rao said.

Earlier the Araku Utsav had been postponed for a year because of various reasons, including strikes by workers. The recent two-month strike in support of Samaikhyandhra and the cyclones also led to the postponement of the Utsav to November 28.
