The cycling centre at Stirling station was formally opened by Transport Minister Keith Brown in May 2013.

So far, Stirling Cycle Hub has received more than 2,000 visitors and helped to organise events attended by dozens of cyclists of all ages.

The hub features a giant wall map, detailing cycle routes in Stirling and the surrounding area, with maps and other information also available to take away.

Steve Montgomery, ScotRail’s managing director, said: “We are delighted that the hard work and effort of so many different organisations has paid off with this award.

“The opening of the Stirling Cycle Hub is a great achievement in so many ways.

“It is a huge boost for cycling in Stirling, and a fantastic way to breathe life into an out-of-use space and encourage ScotRail customers to cycle to the station.”

Transport Minister Keith Brown said: “I am delighted to congratulate ScotRail on receiving a National Cycle Rail Award for the Stirling Cycle Hub, which is a pilot project to promote the integration of active travel and public transport. The Stirling Cycle Hub is instrumental in promoting cycling to local residents and facilitating cycling to and from the station by residents and visitors.

“We recognise the importance of increasing integration of Scotland’s transport networks, particularly cycling and the railways, as enhancing the travel experience is proven to help drive modal shift.

“We are increasing the funding allocated to active travel, as demonstrated by the announcement in the Draft Budget of an additional £20m over the next two years for cycling infrastructure projects, on top of the £58m which will be spent on cycling infrastructure, training and road safety during this spending review.”

Executive Director of Forth Environment Link, Jane Cullingworth, said: “We are thrilled that our work at the Stirling Cycle Hub has been recognised – and only six months after we opened our doors. “It is a great endorsement of the work we are doing in our community.”

Now in their ninth year, the Association of Train Operating Companies’ National Cycle Rail Awards recognise progress by the rail industry and associated organisations in encouraging and developing integrated cycle-rail travel.

The award winners were announced at a ceremony at Westminster, which included a presentation from Transport Minister Stephen Hammond, on Tuesday (19 November).

The Stirling Cycle Hub is funded by Transport Scotland, in partnership with ScotRail, and is managed by Forth Environment Link.
