005-21213On December 01, the first day of winter, a Christmas aircraft of Airberlin Airlines came to Moscow Domodedovo Airport. This German air carrier operating daily flights from the airport to such destinations as Berlin, Munich and Dusseldorf traditionally on the eve of the Christmas holidays put a unique dress on its Boeing 737-800. This year the aircraft named Jolly Santa was colored and decorated with a garland of candles, each pre-Christmas day has its own candle.

Launching new flights, arriving of unusual aircraft and unique looks of airliners stir great interest of aviation photographers – spotters: they try to be the first ones who capture a new plane in a new place. In honor of the arrival of Jolly Santa at Domodedovo Airport a spotting event was held – the airfield apron brought together more than 50 professional aviation photographers and aviation enthusiasts. “Domodedovo hospitably opens its air gateway not only for aircraft, but also for aviation photographers. It is not for the first time I’ve taken pictures here and it is not the first year – during this time the airport has become dear to me. Every shooting at Domodedovo means not only interesting camera perspectives, but also an opportunity to seize the moment and take a photo of unique aircraft arrival,” said Marina Lystseva, aviation photographer.

Spotting events at Domodedovo is what the airport takes pride in. Once it offered to amateur photographers an opportunity to take pictures officially on the airfield apron in 2007, Moscow Domodedovo Airport gave rise to the development of this kind of hobby in Russia. Today official spotting events are regularly held not only in Domodedovo, but in other airports of the country, and the number of aviation photography fans keeps growing.

Aviation spotting is a kind of hobby, taking pictures of flying units, most commonly aircrafts. Such photographers are usually called spotters. Spotting involves taking pictures of planes from the most ‘favorable’, attractive angle and at the shortest distance.
