Taking in the historic sights of Edinburgh Castle and spotting wildlife in the Highlands are among the top ‘only in Britain’ activities enjoyed by overseas visitors, according to a new survey.
Nearly 10,000 visitors from 19 countries took part in the research, which was commissioned by VisitBritain.
Visiting Edinburgh Castle finished third overall in the list of activities, with a fifth (20 per cent) of respondents naming it in their top three, and 6 per cent placing it top of their list.
Spotting wildlife in the Highlands was fourth overall, with 19 per cent placing it in their top three and 7 per cent putting it top of their list of dream ‘only in Britain’ activities.
Only a visit to Buckingham Palace and viewing London from the top of the Shard or from the London Eye finished above the two Scottish entries, which came ahead of activities such as watching an English Premiership football match, shopping on London’s Oxford Street and taking a steam cruise in the Lake District.
Edinburgh Castle proved a popular choice among visitors from the USA, Canada and Italy, while those from Germany and France were fans of a wildlife spotting trip to the Highlands.
Mike Cantlay, Chairman of VisitScotland, said: “Visiting Edinburgh Castle and spotting wildlife in the Highlands have always proved extremely popular among our overseas visitors and I am delighted to see this reflected in this VisitBritain survey. Next year is going to be massive for Scottish tourism, as we get ready to host the Glasgow Commonwealth Games, the Ryder Cup at Gleneagles and, of course, Homecoming. With hundreds of Homecoming events taking place the length and breadth of Scotland, I hope to see more and more overseas visitors coming to experience the very best that our country has to offer.”
