gtaaThe Greater Toronto Airports Authority (GTAA) issued an update on the review it has undertaken to improve service to, and communications with, Canadians, Toronto Pearson travellers, and airport partners.

“Toronto Pearson is Canada’s leading transportation hub. We have a responsibility to our passengers, to our communities, and to our airport partners to offer the best travel and airport experience possible,” said Vijay Kanwar, Chair of the Board of Directors of the GTAA.  “The GTAA has been hard at work, taking a serious look at last month’s events, and opportunities for improvement.”

On April 10, 2014, the Board of Directors and management of the GTAA will announce a series of action items to improve airport operations and communications related to extreme weather events. These action items will be the result of the substantive and comprehensive review currently underway, led by an ad hoc committee of the Board of Directors and in consultation with expert consultants. This review includes:

Public feedback. The GTAA has already received hundreds of thoughtful submissions from Canadians. The GTAA believes that the public has first-hand and personal experiences that need to be heard and is therefore extending the deadline for submissions to February 21, 2014.

Public consultations through small face-to-face discussion groups in early March 2014.
As previously reported, an operations review led by management, including consultations with airlines and other airport partners, debriefs with GTAA employees, front-line employees from across the airport, and in consultation with international industry experts.

Once complete, all reports and recommendations will be reviewed and evaluated by expert, independent members of a blue ribbon panel. Reporting to the ad hoc committee, this panel will include:

Murray Sigler, President of Axia North America. Sigler is the former President and Chief Operating Officer of Canadian Airlines International, as well as former CEO of the Winnipeg Airport Authority.

Normand Boivin, Chief Operating Officer of Heathrow International Airport. Boivin brings nearly 30 years’ experience in the aviation industry, having previously worked for international airports in both Montreal and Quebec City, including as former Vice President Operations for Aeroports de Montreal.

Krista Scaldwell, Vice President, Public Affairs and Communications at the Coca-Cola Company. Scaldwell has led and worked with corporate and consumer communications teams for several of Canada’s leading brands and companies, including her current role with Coca Cola, and previously with Johnson and Johnson Group of Consumer Companies and Pfizer Consumer Healthcare.

The GTAA is the operator of Toronto Pearson International Airport, the largest airport in Canada, the second largest airport in North America in terms of international traffic, and one of the largest airports in North America in terms of total passenger and air cargo traffic.
