Varanasi-Emerging-TouristVaranasi is becoming even more of a tourist destination with political significance, as Narendra Modi will contest one of the seats in upcoming election. On April 19th among visitors, there will be thirty-two British women to see the Festival of Democracy. The holy city has always made important place on the itinerary of travelers.

Modi’s decision to stand from the constituency is drawing the crowds. Under the umbrella of Tourism Development Corporation Society, a group of travel and tour operators from Gujarat has launched travel packages linked to the electoral spectacle in Varanasi. Ever since Modi’s candidature was declared from Varanasi, there has been an overflow of enquiries routed to Manish Sharma, chairman of the grouping and his fellow operators.

Sharma said, “Before the announcement there were about 150 enquiries a day. But a day after Modi’s name was announced, we received nearly 800 enquiries. A large number of NRIs (non-resident Indians) and PIOs (persons of Indian origin) and even foreigners have confirmed bookings.”

A New Delhi-Lucknow-Varanasi package for seven days at $1,200 has attracted many takers from the US, Europe, the Middle East and even Beijing. The package consist of accommodation, meals, local transport, sightseeing at temples and ghats, and visits to party offices besides the chance to attend rallies and meet important leaders, Sharma added.

Varanasi is in a welcoming mood, with few expressing apprehension about what the arrival will do to a town where the infrastructure, characterized by its narrow roads, can prove not enough.
