It was one of the biggest success stories of last year’s City of Culture celebrations in Derry~Londonderry, and Music City 2014 is set to be no different.
The 24-hour music festival, the festival where everyone can play, will make a return on Saturday 21 June, transforming the city’s streets, venues, neighbourhoods, churches, offices and workplaces into performance spaces, from dawn ‘til dawn. Anyone and everyone can join in on the music alongside acts including The Rambling Boys of Pleasure, Solas, Ports, The Clameens, Ego The Jackal, Grim, Our Krypton Son, Gerard McCrystal and so many more.
The day will begin once again with the stunning Dawn Chorus at nearby Grianan of Aileach in Co. Donegal, one of Ireland’s most spectacular ancient sites. This free event will see hundreds join Cór An Ghrianán choir, in celebrating the summer solstice, and welcoming the start of Music City from 3.30am.
Following on from the morning performance, stages will open up across the city on Guildhall Square, Waterloo Place, The Craft Village, The Quayside and City Walls from 10am with the Roaring Meg busking competition taking place within the walls between 12.30 and 4.30. The day will finish off with BBC Radio Ulster presenting the Ulster Orchestra in the award winning Guildhall from 8pm and Salsa Celtica in The Glassworks from 9pm.

“With Music City being so well received last year, we thought it would be great to make it an annual event. Like we did last year, we want everyone to be a part of it. We are encouraging individuals, groups, businesses, workplaces and anyone else who can to put on gigs and performances in their place of work, homes, streets and anywhere else they can, to get in to the spirit of the day. With the Roaring Meg busking competition opening up the streets as a stage, musicians can take their performances from their bedroom to the stage and be in with a chance of winning money prizes while introducing the people to their music.”
Mayor Brenda Stevenson welcomes the return of the festival commenting:
“For the second year running, and due to the success of the event from last year’s City of Culture calendar, Derry City Council is delighted to support the aptly named Music City 2014, a day when the entire city becomes a stage and a chance for all musicians from within and outside the city to show their talent. A fantastic opportunity to celebrate Music City 2014, and the perfect way to kick off our ten day Legenderry Maritime Festival which welcomes the return of the Clipper 2013 – 14 yachts as they stopover on the River Foyle. As well as various locations throughout the city, the Quay will also provide a river front location for performances including a floating stage on the river itself. This is going to be a phenomenal day in which I have no doubt the city will live up to its well earned name as a true Music City.”
