Derry~Londonderry To Celebrate Continental Culture With Ubuntu Festival

Published on : Sunday, June 22, 2014

UbuntuVibrant colours, sights and flavours from across the world will help bring the city’s riverfront to life during the much-anticipated Ubuntu Global Festival this Sunday, June 22.

Organised annually by Derry City Council to promote local awareness of the city’s cultural diversity, Ubuntu takes place on the second day of the LegenDerry Maritime Festival, which heralds the return of the Clipper 2013-14 Round the World Yacht Race (June 21-29) when marquees will transform the riverfront from 10am-10pm daily.

Divided into three continental zones, Sunday will offer ‘Africa and the Caribbean’, ‘Europe and the Americas’, ‘Asia and the Middle East’ and one ‘World Zone’ where families and visitors can expect to find free activities like arts and traditional crafts, storytelling, and music and dance activities.

Mayor Cllr Brenda Stevenson said this year’s colourful festivities are the best yet and will attract huge crowds to the city’s quay side:
‘The Ubuntu Global Festival is one of the highlights of this year’s LegenDerry Maritime Festival and we are expecting this year’s event to be one of the most popular too. With over 50 nationalities living in and around the city, this is a fantastic excuse for us to celebrate our wonderful diversity by exploring the sights, sounds and flavours from across the globe. We are also delighted that MLA Anna Lo will make a trip to the festival this year to speak about her services to ethnic minority communities, which has gained her a MBE.’

In South African, Ubuntu means all our identities are interlinked and should be respected. With this free family festival celebrating global identities in all their glory, visitors can expect an explosion of culture, music, food and much more!

Derry City Council’s Sharon Meenan, said: ’Bring your family and experience the cultural wonders of Africa, the Caribbean, Asia, the Middle East, Europe and the Americas – all right here in Derry~Londonderry. The riverfront Quay will be buzzing with arts and crafts, music and dance, so come along on June 22 and join in with the festivities.’

Set in the heart of the Festival Village this colourful celebration of cultures pays perfect tribute to our international festival. Free family workshops and drop in activities operate 12 noon – 6pm in the three continental zones. The ‘World Zone’ with performances, live music and interactive activities runs from 1pm – 10pm.

As one of the designated ports for the 13-14 Round the World Clipper Yacht Race, the city will be transformed into an international marina to host the 12 Clipper yachts and race teams throughout the LegenDerry Maritime Festival.

Visiting yachts, tall ships, Navy vessels, RNLI Life Boat, canoes and dinghies will be here for the festival – including a floating stage on the Foyle! All this seafaring adventure will be set to a spectacular backdrop of live music for Music City (21 June), street performances, concerts, including the world-famous Beach Boys (26 June), fantastic food and celebration events every day. Don’t miss out on the summer fun!

The Ubuntu festival draws ‘Community Relations Week 2014’ to a magnificent close in the city and is funded through the District Council’s Good Relations Programme (Community Relations Unit, OFMDFM).
