Green Growth and Travelism Summer School to highlight climate resilience and biodiversity

download-222Speaking at the Ashoka Week on Social Innovation, Ignace Schops, Ashoka Fellow, Goldman Prize winner and affiliate of the Climate Leadership Corps of Al Gore, presented his world view, in which biodiversity and nature, placed at the heart of society, become assets for “glocal” development and climate resilience. He will present his vision in depth, during the First Green Growth and Travelism Summer School, August 25-29, Belgium.

Professor Geoffrey Lipman, President of ICTP, who is a co-director of the Summer School, attending the event said that “We need more of this kind of out of the box thinking to help our sector make the transformation to a green growth future. In the final analysis the positive tactical change will come at the local level. We are fortunate to have Ignace as a leader in the School and the National Park as a great case study. Our goal is to engage the generation who are the natural change agents.”

Ignace Schops believes that biodiversity can be both preserved and showcased by connecting the environment to economic and social development, as well as by bringing together the private industry, regional governments and local stakeholders.

During his intervention, Schops said: “First, we need to give more space, light, food and care to Nature. Second, we need to translate `biodiversity` in a language that people can understand and relate to. It is only when they`ll find reasons to love the world that they`ll save it. Third, we need to adopt the (Re)connection model in which we reconnect nature with nature, people with nature, business with nature, as well as policy with practice. It is by thinking globally, acting locally and changing personally that we`ll create the world we want, starting today, caring for nature and future generations.”
