aberdeen-logo (1)The renovation of an Aberdeen play park received a major cash injection this week, as a cheque for £25,000 was handed over from the airport.

The Aberdeen International Airport Community Panel pledged the donation earlier this year to the Girdleness Park improvement programme, for the benefit of the Balnagask and Torry area areas of the city.

The cheque has now been handed over, in the presence of members of the local community councils, community centre, heritage groups and even some local nursery kids who will use the new-look park on completion.

The commitment from airport prompted a match-funded donation from the city council, allowing work to have got underway already on the ambitious transformation.

Sarah Rochester is from the Airport Community Panel. She said “To arrive on-site and see work already underway with old play equipment being stripped out was very encouraging. It shows that our donation is already making a difference and this transformation will become a reality in the coming months.

It was also great to meet some of the kids who will use the park, and to get a last chance to play on the old roundabout before it is also consigned to the scrap heap, never one to pass on a bit of play-time.”

Soozy Lai is from the Aberdeen Play Forum, who coordinated the application for funding. She said “Outdoor play is absolutely essential for the healthy development of children; for outdoor play to happen we need safe and intriguing public spaces.

No one could dispute that this park was truly dire – local folks have said that, even in this half dug-up state, the space has already been drastically improved! The money from the airport, now teamed with match-funding from ACC, is allowing for a complete make-over of the park.

The work will make a world of difference to families in the area. We’re all really excited about seeing the new design,

but even more about seeing more families out to play. Watch this space for a grand opening event.”

It is hoped that the new-look park will be in use before the end of the year.
