The tourism industry of Bali has been hit by surprise at the government’s decision to not holding government meetings in hotels. The Deputy Chairman of the Indonesian Tourism Industry Association (GIPI) Bali Bagus Sudibya stated that limitation of the civil servants (PNS), ministries and government’s owned company meeting at the hotel from 1 December 2014.
According to him, the implementation of the rule will directly affect hotel businesses which rely mostly on “meetings, incentive, conference and exhibition” (MICE) which are often carried out by the government.
He said that the government contributes 100 per cent to the MICE range.
The Indonesian Hotel and Restaurant Association (IHRA) Bali recorded substantial losses as a result of the ban by the government meeting held at the hotel.
The Chairman of the IHRA Bali, Tjokorda Oka Artha Ardana Sukawati said that25 percent losses were reported from Badung MICE sector.
MICE contributes largely to the hospitality business and the island has gets a great part of its revenue from the government sector. The government’s taking away its support has hit the hospitality sector of Indonesia hard.
