Multicultural Affairs Minister Zoe Bettison says people are encouraged to come along and enjoy Indian food and entertainment including Bollywood dancing, face-painting, cultural music and children’s activities.

“Our State has a strong connection with India with more than 26,000 South Australians having Indian ancestry,” Ms Bettison said.

“And with Adelaide the official host of the Indian team for the Cricket World Cup 2015, ties between our State and this proud cricketing nation will be further strengthened.

“The South Australian Indian community is a diverse, vibrant and thriving one which includes more than 40 clubs and organisations.”

Among the crowd will be more than 250 volunteers, many from the Indian and Pakistan communities, who will assist players, spectators and fans with transport, catering and other operational support ahead of Sunday’s blockbuster.

“The youngest volunteer is 18-years-old and the oldest is 90, showing that people of all ages are committed and passionate about helping their community,” Ms Bettison said.

“The volunteers will undertake 1400 individual shifts across the duration of the tournament, giving many thousands of hours of their time to support this event.”

Ms Bettison said that in the past five years, more migrants have come to South Australia from India than any other country, including China and the United Kingdom.

“The South Australian Indian community fosters important relationships for South Australia across tourism, business, investment, research, education and trade,” she said.

“The State Government recognises the importance of our engagement with India and is committed to building on existing economic, educational and cultural partnerships.”
