The cyclone hit small yet spectacular island of Vanuatu is facing the worst kind of ordeal. The beautiful island has suddenly been ruffled by cyclone Pam that ripped through the calm and beautiful landmass. Small thatched roof huts, elegant palm trees are sheared off their peaceful beauty and left barren by the shocking impact of the cyclone.
The extent of the damage is not known yet but most of the island remains without electricity. The cyclone has closed down the tourism sector in the island. The divested conditions in the island have forced most tourists out. Local tour operators fear that by the time things get better and visitors start returning to the island, many tour operators may lose their jobs and livelihood.
There have been no tourists since the island was hit by the cyclone. The remote areas of the island are flooded and drinking water is also not available in many areas.
The tourism industry brings 40 per cent revenue for Vanuatu`s economy. According to the Australian government’s estimate 267,000 people depend on tourism for their livelihood.
Communication to as many as 80 islands in the archipelago is still down. However the government is trying to restores conditions back to normal. It is trying to bring food and drinking water to the islanders.
The island harbours many luxury resorts but in the given conditions if the situation is not brought to normal soon the island will definitely suffer a tourism setback. Most resorts and hotels are closing down. With just around two to three tourists still holding on amid the trying conditions the island mostly looks desolate and devastated.
