The 100 meters glass walkway, China’s Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon suspended bridge left visitors screaming as the first cracks appeared on the bridge with visitors on it. Visitors ran screaming in panic as they saw the U-shaped path at Yuntaishan (Yuntai Mountain) Scenic Park had suffered damage.
The bridge is just two weeks old and the visible cracks scared people who had gone to visit the Henan province in central China. The place was evacuated after the cracks appeared.
A visitor recalled when he was approaching the end of the passage he heard a loud bang. The sudden sound of the glass cracking left his legs trembling. There was panic as the pane underneath began to shatter. People screamed that the glass had actually cracked. People were terrified as they walked slowly to the safest end.
Opened on September 20, the Cliffside path spans 260 meters (853 feet), with a 68-meter glass-bottom (223-foot) section. It hangs 1,080 meters above sea level.
The park claims that the cracks will cause no threat to visitors. However the glass walkway is closed to visitors for the time being. Safety experts have been deployed to find the actual reason behind the cracks. Damages are supposedly caused due to external force from sharp objects. Since the surface is made of custom-made three-layer tempered glass panes. The cracks only affect one layer of the pane and will not pose threat to safety. However users feel that the whole glass looked fractured.
Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon Bridge is scheduled to open in the Hunan province later this year. It is about 300 kilometers (186 miles) northwest of Shiniuzhai. Authorities feel that glass floors often face such damages and the same incident had taken place in London’s glass Tower Bridge. The broken pane will be replaced and until then the path will be temporarily closed.
