tourism-australiaTourism Australia has announced the appointment of Michael Newcombe to the role of Regional General Manager (RGM) of South/South East Asia & Gulf, based in Singapore.
Mr Newcombe, who is an experienced aviation executive with a strong background in commercial operations will take up the role shortly.

Tourism Australia Managing Director John O’Sullivan said he was delighted to have someone of Michael Newcombe’s calibre joining the organisation to head up its operations in this key tourism region.

“The South and South East Asia region along with our key markets in the Gulf are vital to Australian tourism’s future and to achieving our long term plans to grow the industry to as much $140 billion annually by the end of the decade,” Mr O’Sullivan said.

“Michael started his career with professional consulting firm Deloitte before spending 10 years working in the aviation sector, in strategy and business development, and then running the day-to-day commercial activities and operations at Jetstar Asia where he was instrumental in the launch of Jetstar Japan.

“More recently, Michael has been based in Singapore and, with his knowledge and understanding of the region, he will be a welcome addition to our operations,” Mr O’Sullivan said.

Mr Newcombe will replace RGM Karyn Kent who departed Tourism Australia on 20 June 2014 to take up a new role in Adelaide.
Mr O’Sullivan commended outgoing RGM Karyn Kent for her incredible efforts during the past 18 months.

“We are very sad to see Karyn depart as she has made a significant contribution during her time at Tourism Australia. The strong visitor numbers out of the region are testimony to the efforts of Karyn and the team,” Mr O’Sullivan said.

The South and South East Asia markets and the Gulf are currently worth around $3.9 billion annually to Australian tourism, and delivered around one million visitors in 2013.
