TA_NickyWu_15102013-300x300Tourism Australia, in conjunction with Destination NSW and Tourism and Events Queensland, has enlisted the support of one of China’s most popular celebrities in a move aimed at encouraging more visitors from Greater China.

Popular actor and ‘Mandopop’ singer Nicky Wu will travel to NSW and Queensland as part of a major tourism promotion with iQiyi, one of China’s most influential and popular video sites.

His visit to NSW will include a visit to the Blue Mountains, as well as a tour of Sydney’s iconic sights, including Bondi beach, a Sydney Harbour Bridge climb and a scenic flight over the harbour city. In Queensland, he will visit Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary and also fulfil one of his lifetime’s dreams – diving on the Great Barrier Reef.

This is the first trip to Australia by Wu, who was a member of a ‘boy band’ called ‘The Little Tigers’ in the 1980s. He later went on to have a solo singing career, before developing a successful career in film and television. Wu has a strong online following, with over 29 million fans on Weibo.

Tourism Australia Managing Director Andrew McEvoy said Nicky Wu was one of China’s most well-known stars and the huge awareness gained from his visit, and resulting media exposure within Australia’s fastest growing and most valuable international market, would undoubtedly inspire more visitors.

“We already know from our research that Australia’s most popular drawcard amongst the Chinese is our unspoilt nature and unique wildlife, together with the great food and wine, and entertainment that can be enjoyed in our contemporary cities.

“Nicky will certainly get to sample all of these in an action packed schedule which takes in some of our country’s most iconic sights and popular attractions. And better still, thanks to his enormous appeal and the huge presence he enjoys online and through social media, those experiences will be shared with millions of his followers, many of whom already have our country at the top of their travel wish list,” Mr McEvoy said.

Tourism Australia has used the opportunity to welcome Nicky Wu into its Friends of Australia advocacy program, which recruits well known individuals to promote Australia to people around the world.

China now represents Australia’s fastest growing and most valuable market for international visitors, worth $4.5 billion to the industry with more than 700,000 visitors in the past 12 months. Tourism Australia believes there is potential for this market to grow to up to A$9 billion in expenditure by 2020.
